Treating & Preventing Ingrown Hair

Ingrown hairs curl under the skin, causing burning or itching sensations. Identify ingrown hairs, treat them and prevent the return of ingrown hairs with a little education about how they occur. By practicing a little maintenance and skin care, you can prevent most ingrown hairs from coming back. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Treat Ingrown Hairs

    • 1

Let the hair grow as an initial method of treatment. Sometimes shaving too close to the skin can cause ingrown hairs, though most of the time it is either caused by bacteria or naturally curly hair that cannot break the skin fast enough.

    • 2

Use temporary hair removal cream as a second step approach to removing ingrown hairs. Salicylic acid is a good ingredient for acne and hair removal products.

    • 3

Use laser hair removal for stubborn hairs that keep curling under the skin.

    • 4

Use electrolysis as a last resort to remove ingrown hairs, as this will remove the hair permanently. Ask a doctor if this is really your last option for ingrown hairs.

Prevent the Return of Ingrown Hairs

    • 5

Clean your skin with soap and warm water.

    • 6

Gently wash off all soap from your skin with warm water.

    • 7

Apply cool water to the skin after you have removed all soap. Allow the skin to breathe for a few minutes, then pat it dry with a towel.

    • 8

Apply lotion that contains aloe vera to the face or other areas where ingrown hairs occur. Men often find ingrown hairs around the jaw area.

    • 9

Shave your face with electric razor, if you are a man. Allow the ingrown hair to grow more, and it will eventually heal. Men should shave up the neck and then down on the cheeks and around the mouth area. Women need to shave legs upward and against the grain.

    • 10

See a doctor if healing does not occur within a week, or if ingrown hairs are continuously growing under the skin.

Tips & Warnings

  • Allow for sensitive skin to fully dry after cleaning but before applying lotions or facial creams.

  • Using a mask will tighten the pores and potentially lead to ingrown hairs.

  • Use cool water to refresh the skin and tighten the pores after cleaning.
