How to Write a Cover Letter for a Resume

So you are ready to write your cover letter, but you’re still not sure what to include in it. Although writing a cover letter may take time, it is definitely an important document to have during your job search, since many employers prefer applicants to submit both a cover letter and a resume when applying for jobs.

  • Look over your resume and decide which details you want to include in your cover letter. Your cover letter should highlight your qualifications, skills and work experiences that relate to the position that you are applying for. You may also include specific examples of accomplishments, activities or projects that are a part of your work history.

  • Create the first section of your letter. Introduce yourself to the employer (state your first and last name) and let him know why you are writing the cover letter. Be sure to mention the name of the position that you are applying for and where you learned about the job opening. Try to keep the first paragraph brief (2 to 3 sentences).

  • Develop the next paragraph. Your second paragraph (the body) should include enough relevant information to persuade the employer to consider you for that position. This is the section of the cover letter where you need to sell yourself to the employer and convince her that you are the right person for that job. Be sure to list your qualifications and other relevant work-related information in this paragraph. Feel free to add another paragraph if necessary, but limit the body of your cover letter to no more than 2 paragraphs.

  • Write the last paragraph of your cover letter. The final paragraph is basically the conclusion of your letter. In this section, you should remind the employer to review your resume and let him know when you are available to meet for an interview. Be sure to let the employer know how to contact you for an interview as well (include a telephone number and email address). Don’t forget to thank the employer for taking the time to review your cover letter and resume and be sure to include your signature at the end of the letter.

  • Proofread your cover letter and check for errors. Once you have completed the rough draft of your cover letter, you should read it a few times and make sure that everything looks okay. Make the necessary corrections to it and read over your letter again. Once the letter meets your expectations you should save the document and print a few copies of it.

  • Be sure to address your cover letter to a specific person at that company, and don’t forget to date the letter.
  • Try to use a common font style and size in your cover letter, such as Times New Roman, size 12 font.
  • Do not include any personal information in your cover letter like your social security number, driver’s license number or date of birth.
