Trimming or cutting eyelashes to gain thicker and longer lashes is a myth. There is no scientific data to prove this occurrence. There is much discussion about this technique in blogs and forums where people tout the benefits of this practice. If you choose to try trimming your lashes for growth outcome, here are a few pointers and tips.

1. Trimming eyelashes is done either for a medical reason, like surgery; or in the case of having too long a lash that bothers your vision or annoys you when they make contact with skin.

2. Growth of eyelashes does occur, but slower than the hair on your head. Trimming eyelashes to lengthen the lash is a wives tale. There is no medical evidence that this occurs. There is some discussion of it on forums and chat rooms online. Your eyelashes are dead hairs, just like your eyebrows or hair on your head. The predisposition of growth occurs in the hairs follicle where your skin is alive and active, the hair extending from your skin is dead and it does not trigger the follicle to stimulate growth.

3. Cutting of your eyelash needs to be done in a slow and meticulous manner. Use small, blunt scissors and a magnifying mirror.

4. Trim the ends of the lash taking caution not to cut too much. Do trim both top and bottom lashes. Cut slowly so as not to pull or pluck any lashes out.

5. Wash your face afterward making sure to remove any loose hairs. You want to make sure your trimmings do not get into your eyeball where they can cause irritation or small abrasions.

6. Mistakes do happen. For whatever reason, if you find you have cut too much of your lash off, you can use fake lashes to fill in the error. Lashes will grow back, but slowly. You will not notice any difference for a least a month if not longer.
