How to Play Basic Dominoes

Save

You can play Dominoes with your grandma, your buddies and your kids. It's one of those rare games with universal appeal. It has just enough strategy to keep things interesting. It also contains enough luck that you can blame fate when you lose big. There are many different rule variations that can be used. Before you sit down to a serious round, make sure that everyone is playing the same game. Play basic Dominoes for some good, classic fun!

  • Turn the dominoes face down on the table and count them. There should be 26 in total. Mix the dominoes around without turning them over. The dominoes should be placed in a completely random fashion.

  • Have each player draw seven dominoes.

  • Keep things going. The player with the highest double should play it. First, players check with each other to see if anyone has the double six. If not, they check for the double five until someone can play a double.

  • Play a domino. Take a domino from your hand with the same value as the domino on the table. Put it down so that the side of one domino touches the other one. For example, if you played a 6/5 against a 6/6, you would put it so that the 6 of your domino touches the 6 of the other one.

  • Continue to place dominoes that share like value on any open slots. Only the far domino on either side is considered open.

  • If you don't have a domino that you can play, pick one from the pile. Keep picking until you do. If there are no more dominoes, pass.

  • Play until someone runs out of dominoes. That person wins the hand, and everyone else gets the number of points in their hand.

  • Play until someone gets 50 points. When that happens, the person with the least points wins the game.

Tips & Warnings

  • When you run out of space, you can play a domino at a right angle.
