How to Use the Montessori Farm Lesson to Teach Grammar

The Montessori method is designed especially to help children learn in the way that best suits them. The items are small enough for children to handle, and everything else used in the method is correctly proportioned for children to use. Also, Montessori educational materials, like the farm lesson that will be discussed here, are specifically geared towards independent learning that children can take responsibility for.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up the Montessori farm objects in a center. Be sure to include the farm, the animals and the word cards (see Resources below). The word cards that you want to use should be verb cards like "is" and "are," as well as different types of action verb cards like "go," "goes" and "sleeps," "sleep." Also include several cards with "the" on them.

    • 2

Show the children how to use this center. Take them over a few at a time and explain that they should use a combination of the word cards as well as the animals in the farm to create sentences. An example would be "the cow goes," using word cards for "the" and "goes" and using the cow to represent himself.

    • 3

Allow the children to explore the center and start to make sentences.

    • 4

Show children how to make a sentence, and then say the sentence out loud to see if it makes sense.

    • 5

Supervise the children's use of the center, but remember that their education should be mostly independent.

Tips & Warnings

  • Older or more experienced children can teach younger ones about the center.

  • Never be negative when it comes to teaching grammar
