The easiest and most economical way of redecorating is simply to repaint a room. However, with the advent of semi-gloss paint a number of years ago, this has become a question in some households. Semi-gloss paint, while wonderful for cleaning and known for its glossy look, can not be painted over as easily as a wall or molding painted in flat or satin could. There are a few extra steps that will guarantee that new paint will adhere to any surface painted with semi-gloss paint. There are two different ways to accomplish this.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • TSP (trisodium phosphate)
  • Soapy water or wall washing compound
  • Clean water
  • Sponge
  • Lint-free cotton cloth
  • Sand paper
  1. Step 1

Wash the surface that will be painted with warm soapy water, being sure to dry it thoroughly. Be sure to remove grease, grime, dirt and dust from the surface before beginning the rest of the preparation of the semi-gloss surface. Continue using one of the two methods described below.

  2. Step 2

Roughen the surface. New paint will not stick properly to semi-gloss without the surface of the semi-gloss being "roughed up." One way this can be done is with sandpaper. Either using a sander or by hand, rub the sandpaper over the entire surface of the area to be painted, making sure not to miss any part. Anything you miss may peel.

  3. Step 3

Wipe the area with a TSP product (your second option). This is a liquid that smells similar to alcohol and makes the semi-gloss paint "sticky" enough for other paints to attach to. The entire surface should be wiped down with the product--anything not covered may peel later.

  4. Step 4

Wipe down the surface. The techniques vary depending on which method you chose to use. After the surface has been sanded, wash the area with warm water and a sponge, then dry with a lint free cloth. Allow the area to completely dry before painting. It is recommended to allow at least 8 hours before beginning to paint. Most TSP products require that the area be wiped down again, either with water or just a clean dry cloth. Make sure to follow the recommended procedures.

  5. Step 5

    Paint the area normally.

Tips & Warnings
  • Instead of semi-gloss paint, consider a satin or eggshell. These will give that glossy look to a surface, without having to do the extra prep before painting.
  • TSP can be harmful. Please be aware of the manufacturer's warnings. Wear gloves and make sure the area is properly vented.
