However, before you begin to think you can use it in this way you need to have some training and a lot of practice at a shooting range. Shooting the weapon will not only get you more familiar with the weapon but will give you confidence in what it can do.

Safety. You must remember and work on measures of safety when using a shotgun as a weapon. This can be accomplished by following some simple safety rules. Make sure that when you are practicing with your shotgun to double check and make sure it is not loaded. This is a quick and easy task that could save your life or the life of someone else. This will allow you to practice getting to your gun quickly and loading it quickly.

Loading your gun. Loading your gun quickly and safely is key to using your shotgun for self defense. One thing you need to do is to keep your ammunition close to your gun. Keeping your gun loaded is not recommended, especially if you have children in or around your house. There are many storage options that will allow you to keep your ammunition close by without having to search it out if needed quickly.

Close quarter combat. Another very good way to use your shot gun as a self defense weapon is to use it in close combat. This can be done very easily by using the stock of the gun as either a gouging weapon or a bat. One suggested way to use it is if you are out of ammunition or if it is unloaded is to strike your opponent with quick strikes to either the head or groin.
