How to Change the Default Finder Window Directory in Mac OS X

Customize your Mac to open a new Finder window in any folder or directory on your computer. You can have your Mac open new windows in your Home, Desktop, Pictures or any existing or new directory. In this lesion you will learn how to change the default Finder window directory in Mac OS X.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Click on your Desktop to make sure your Mac has the Finder selected as the active application. In the Finder, click on “Finder” in the Mac OS menu bar and select “Preferences” and release the mouse.

    Selecting “Preferences” opens a new window with the Finder preference pane. Select the pop up menu under “New Finder windows open:” and select one of the presets. The presets include Desktop, Computer, Hard Drive Name, iDisk, Home and Documents.

  3. Step 3

    To select a different folder or directory not included in the pop up list, select “Other…”

    Selecting “Other” will open a directory dialogue window. Find and select the directory or folder you wish to use and select “Choose.“ The new folder or directory will become your default Finder window.
