Adults approaching retirement may consider joining the American Association of Retired People, or AARP. This article describes the application requirements and process for joining.

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer with Internet access
  • Telephone access

    Obtain and Complete an AARP Membership Application

  1. Step 1

    Find applications by telephone directly from AARP by calling 1-800-566-0242 or on line by accessing the AARP website.

  2. Step 2

    Include your name, mailing address, telephone number, date of of birth and e-mail address (optional).You must be 50 years of age or older to join AARP.

  3. Step 3

    Enter name and date of birth of spouse if married. Spousal membership is free.

  4. Step 4

    Enter billing information, including the number of years of membership is to be purchased. It's $12.50 per year, with lower rates for multiyear membership commitments. A credit card number and expiration date is preferred for online applications, but you may request to pay by personal check.

  5. Step 5

    Submit completed application either by mail to: AARP 601 East NW st., Washington, DC 20049 or submit online.

  6. Step 6

    Call AARP customer support at 1-800-566-0242 to ask any questions concerning the application process, membership benefits, or to obtain a temporary membership card for use until the permanent card is issued.
