Music is a universal form of expression and has been used by every culture in its separate way. Young up and coming musicians and artists are often overlooked because of the focus on more mainstream music that is broadly accepted by many. Taking the chance to explore non-mainstream music can feel like gambling sometimes but the rewards far outweigh the risks.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Join an online music club. Lots of non-mainstream artists are finding their way onto the scene by offering their music on downloadable music sites. These sites will often describe the artist and give a sample of their music. These samples may be previewed before purchase and are sometimes offered at a lower price if you buy the entire album.

  2. Step 2

Go to local concerts. Non-mainstream music starts at the local level. Bands and other artists who are just starting out don’t usually go on national tours but stay in the local bar, club, and pub scene. These are great places to see some new talent that is little known. Not only will this help the local artist, but if they ever do become bigger, you will be able to say you were a fan before they became a national craze. Think about Nirvana in Washington before they became internationally famous.

  3. Step 3

Shop for some new compact discs. Music stores that sell compact discs and other forms of music will have a plethora of music from artists that are non-mainstream. With a wide variety of music to choose from, take a chance on a few of them that seem interesting to you. You may not like every song you hear but this will give you a good chance to broaden your horizons.. Buying the album used may also offset some of the cost and risk to you.

  4. Step 4

Choose from your favorite style. If you know you do not like or are less prone to listen to a certain kind of music, don’t gamble by exploring other genres of music first. When you are exploring non-mainstream music, stay within your favorite style first to give yourself a greater chance of liking what you choose. If you find that your calculated risk has paid off for you, then it may be time to move on to other types from there.

  5. Step 5

Look on a regular basis. One of the keys to exploring non-mainstream music is to look on a regular basis. Since most of these artists are not very well known everywhere, the buzz they may have can fade away quickly. This means that an artist that may have been one of your favorites could be almost impossible to find. The quicker you find these artists and the more you look for new music, the better chance you will have of finding something you like and spreading even more buzz about an artist that is up and coming.

Tips & Warnings
  • Call local music and musical equipment stores to find out about upcoming concerts or artists in your area.
  • You may run into the situation where you do not like some of the music you purchase at all. Do not let this discourage you from exploring other non-mainstream music.
