Step 1
Get close to your opponent. If you can't reach out and touch your opponent, you are too far away to throw the double leg takedown. Even a slow opponent will have time to react and defend if you shoot for his legs from more than an arm's length away.
-
Step 2
Get low. You are attacking your opponent's legs, so you need to get beneath his guard. You can throw the double leg takedown from a slightly squatted position or from one knee. If you are squatting, be sure to bend at the knees and keep solid balance. Bending over at the waist exposes you to all sorts of attacks.
-
Step 3
Make your opponent go high. If your opponent sees you going low, he will back off or prepare a defense. Throwing the double leg takedown requires surprise. Feint going high. When your opponent straightens up, go low. The double leg takedown is also effective as your opponent transitions from one position to another. If your opponent starts coming in then changes his mind and backs out, attack immediately while he is on his heels.
-
Step 4
Step in deep as fast as you can. This step should ideally be between your opponent's legs. Be careful not to shoot your shoulders beyond your opponent's knees. You want your base to be deep, but not so far that your opponent falls flat on top of you.
-
Step 5
Thrust your shoulder hard into your opponent's gut. At the same time, grab the back of both his knees with both hands. This will make him bend over and bring his center of gravity over your back.
-
Step 6
Run straight through your opponent. Move your feet quickly and push your opponent backward. To lift him up, straighten your body. To flatten him on his back, pull his knees toward you. He will land flat on his back with you on top.
