If you need a stethoscope, you need a tool that will help you work faster and better. Picking a stethoscope is an individual choice based on your own hearing and its intended use. A nurse or doctor who works with children may need a different model than those working with senior citizens. The stethoscope spends a lot of time around your neck, so picking the right one for your needs is essential.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Review your specific needs. You can choose from many stethoscope models and brands, but only two types are used frequently by medical personnel: the dual-head and the single-head stethoscope. Use a dual-head for low-frequency lung sounds. Use the diaphragm mode for high-frequency heart sounds. Used by the majority of hospital personnel, the dual-head is the more popular instrument. The single-head variety is used by cardiologists to hear heart sounds.

  2. Step 2

Surf the Internet for the best buys on stethoscopes, or try nearby medical supply facilities. Tunable corrugated diaphragm stethoscopes, for example, tend to be less durable. Many medical professionals prefer less cumbersome, lightweight stethoscopes.

  3. Step 3

Keep extra ear pieces readily available. Stethoscope ear pieces are sold at medical professional stores and can be replaced easily.

  4. Step 4

Buy at least two stethoscopes of the same brand in case one does not give the right type of sound for your ears. Common sense and professional experience can you help determine whether a single-head or dual-head stethoscope best suits your needs. Buying more than one can extend the life of each.

  5. Step 5

Don't be afraid to buy a more expensive model. Cheaper stethoscopes can break easily and can have poor sound quality. The diaphragms and tubing of cheaper models can also crack easily.

Tips & Warnings
  • Littman is one company that makes high-quality stethoscopes and frequently has sales on them. They last many years and have replaceable parts.
