Do a Knit-on Cast-on
Do a Knit-on Cast-on

There are many methods to cast on your yarn when starting a knitting project, and each one brings a slightly different result. Choosing which method is best depends on the type of project you'll be doing and the method you are most comfortable with. Many knitters stick with the basic thumb cast-on, which works great with almost anything. A knit-on cast-on uses two needles to knit on your beginning stitches, and it produces a soft edge when worked through the loop fronts and a firm edge when worked through the loop backs.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Place a slip knot on the left-hand needle.

  2. Step 2

Insert the tip of the right-hand needle into the loop and wind the ball end of the yarn around the tip of the right-hand needle.

  3. Step 3

Slide the right-hand needle back and, with the tip, pull the yarn through the slip knot to make a new stitch.

  4. Step 4

Slip the new stitch onto the left-hand needle, making sure that it lies in the same direction.

  5. Step 5

Without withdrawing the right-hand needle, repeat until you have the required number of stitches.
