Teaching English Grammar

The English language is full of special rules and exceptions. Learning the intricacies of the English language is not an easy task. The duty of this task falls to the teacher to find unique and interesting ways to present grammar rules and practice. However, teaching grammar successfully starts with correctly modeling the language.

Instructions

  1. Teaching English Grammar

    • 1

Model good grammar in speech and writing. The first step to successfully teaching good grammar is using it correctly. Actively showing the students correct usage and form plays a great role in learning English grammar. Encourage students to listen and look for mistakes in speech and writing. This is not meant to make fun of anyone; it’s meant to teach the students to listen and read carefully while looking for mistakes.

    • 2

Teach the basic principles and most common grammar rules. Choose the grammar rules where students make the most common mistakes. Going over these rules early will provide the students with extra practice and more confidence when faced with these grammar situations. Have students understand the basic principle of each rule and go over examples, but don’t overload them with information.

    • 3

Practice. Students learn best when they have a chance to do something. Providing hands on experience and practice with each grammar rule is essential to achieving success. Remember, just because it's practice doesn’t mean it has to be homework. Teachers want to see if a student, not a parent, understands a concept. Also, the practice doesn’t have to be long. Successfully completing 10 to 15 questions over a topic provides sufficient practice for one class period.

    • 4

Provide different types of grammar work. Students need to experience all types of work to successfully learn English grammar. While it is beneficial for students to write and edit their own work, even more helpful is having a student edit another student’s work. Often, students are unable to see their own mistakes because they know what they wanted to say. Worksheets, listening exercises and reviews provide useful instruction.

    • 5

Focus on one rule at a time. This goes for every aspect of the classroom, even grading and writing. Tell the students what rule you will be learning and practice. Look for mistakes and also where they used the rule correctly. This allows students to focus on one topic at a time and master it. Then, after a few rules have been covered, review those three or four and practice using those by building on the past few lessons.
