- Laptop owner's manual
- New memory module
- Anti-static wrist strap

Step 1
Determine how much memory is currently installed in your laptop. Go to the Start menu and click "Settings," "Control Panel," "System" and then select the "General" tab. The amount of memory installed will be listed at the bottom of the page.

Consult the owner's manual to determine the maximum amount of memory your laptop can handle. The manual will also tell you what type and speed of memory you need and how many memory slots are available in your model.

Turn off the laptop, unplug it, then touch something metal to eliminate static charge. You can also use an anti-static wrist strap, but it is not necessary. Turn the laptop over, then remove the main battery.

Remove the screw that holds the memory compartment cover in place. Remove the cover and lay it aside. Line up the notches of the new memory with a free memory slot by tilting it backwards slightly. Press down and back to snap it into place. Replace the memory compartment cover and the battery.

Step 5
Plug the laptop in and turn it on. If the laptop starts to beep, the memory is not installed correctly. If this is the case, repeat Steps 3 and 4 to make sure the memory is securely snapped into the slot. Once it's installed properly, repeat Step 1 to make sure the system is detecting the new memory amount.
