How to Count Words in Microsoft Word 2003

Most writers that rely upon word processing software applications are well familiar with the word counting feature. This invaluable feature will count all of the words in a document in mere seconds. It comes in especially handy for those who are working on articles or assignments that must meet a minimum word requirement.

      Open the document. Click on “File” and then click on “Open.” Browse to the desired document and click “Open” to access it.

      Count the words in the entire document. Click on “Tools” and then select “Word Count.” A word count properties box will open in the middle of the application with the true word count and readability rating.

      Highlight a specific portion of text to count words. Click and drag the mouse cursor over the desired portion of text and release the button when you are finished; the text will remain highlighted. Click on “Insert” and then click on “Word Count.” A word count properties box will open with the true word count of the selected text.
