Compare Laptop Computers

Years ago the question on every computer shopper’s mind was whether to buy a desktop or a laptop computer. Now laptop computers are out-selling desktop systems, and the question is what type of laptop to buy. There are many reasons to buy a laptop computer, including size, portability and convenience. Here are ways to compare laptop computers.

From Quick Guide: Laptop Computer Basics
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide why you need the laptop computer. Laptop computers come in different sizes and weights, and the one you buy depends on what you will do with it. Decide if this is your main computer or a second computer. Buy a laptop with larger screen size if this is your main computer. Go for smaller size and lighter weight if it is your second computer.

  2. Step 2

Consider different features before you buy. You need bigger hard drive space if you’re a photo enthusiast and higher graphics capability if you watch movies or play video games on your laptop computer. Consider memory size if you do a lot of word processing and surf the internet, and battery lifespan if you will be mobile with the laptop.

  3. Step 3

Visit local electronic stores and test-drive some of the laptop computers on display. This allows you to find the brand you are comfortable with. Look at various screen displays and sizes to determine the right display and size for your needs. Compare various prices while you are in the store and note the accessories like mouse and traveling bags that come free with the laptop computers.

  4. Step 4

Ask family and friends about their experience with various laptop computers. This allows you to eliminate manufacturers with brands that have lower battery lifespan and poor customer service. Ask them where they bought their laptop computers, if they are happy with their purchases and if they will buy that brand again.

  5. Step 5

Visit laptop review websites and read reviews of various laptop computers by other buyers. You will learn about reliable brands and those to stay away from based on the experience of others. See Resources below for additional information.

  6. Step 6

Visit comparison-shopping sites like Google Products search to find the best deals on laptop computers. This will ensure you don’t pay too much for your laptop computer. See Resources below for additional information.

Tips & Warnings
  • Laptop computers are expensive and hard to upgrade, so it is better to buy the best laptop you can afford. Buy a laptop with a bigger hard drive than you currently need, if you can afford it.
