How to Create Decorative Table Runners

Even the plainest table becomes instantly festive when a runner is added. A table runner is a narrow piece of cloth that runs the length of the table as pure decoration. However, sometimes several runners are positioned across the width of a table, each one serving as kind of a place mat for two people seated opposite each other. Runners can be created for use at simple meals as well as for formal dinners. The following tips will outline how to make this lovely table accent.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and width of your table. If you plan to use the runner with a table’s leaf, make sure you measure the leaf as well and add that to the table’s length. Add 2 feet to your measurements. This will allow 1 foot of the table runner to hang over the end of the table. So, for example, if your table, with leaf, is 60 inches long, you will need a 84-inch table runner.

Make a simple fabric runner. Choose an attractive material that is approximately 45 inches wide. Buy the correct length. Using the example in Step 1, you would need 2 1/3 yards. Fold the fabric in half lengthwise. Machine stitch 1 inch from the edge on three sides. Turn inside out. Sew the third edge by hand. Press the runner. Since the runner can be flipped to the other side before laundering, this simple method is particularly useful for runners that will be used across the table as double place mats.

Vary the runner in Step 2. You might give the runner pointed ends and attach tassels or pom-poms, or consider curving the edges and decorate with a festive trim. It might be fun to use two different fabrics on a reversible runner.

Create no-sew runners by using fabrics which do not need to be finished. For example, strips of silver vinyl or striped oilcloth would instantly brighten a table and are especially practical for across the table place mat runners. Felt can be used for a runner that will only be used down the center of a table where it is unlikely to get wet or soiled. Felt is particularly appropriate for holiday runners because it is easy to decorate with small felt pieces cut into shapes, such as Christmas wreaths or jack-o-lanterns.

Tips & Warnings

  • Buy extra cloth fabric and make napkins to match your table runner.

  • Check washing instructions before purchasing fabric.
