Things You'll Need:
- Thermal protector
- Leave-in conditioner
-
Step 1
Spray on a thermal protector. Thermal protectors are solutions that protect the hair from heat. A name of one that many stylists use is Abba Pure Thermal Protector. It should be sprayed on the hair prior to curling it.
-
Step 2
Use the 1 second rule. Forget the old wives' tale you heard as a child. You don’t need to hold a curling iron in your hair for 3 seconds in order to get a good curl. Do it for only a second and let your hair cool. The longer your hair cools, the better your curls will set.
-
Step 3
Turn down the heat. Do it one notch lower than usual. Let your hair cool longer before combing out your curls. You will see that you get the same effects as if you had curled your hair at a higher temperature.
-
Step 4
Rub in a leave-in conditioner. Do it after you curled your hair and are ready to style it. Leave-in conditions like Paul Mitchell’s Tea Tree Oil add moisture back into the hair. It balances out the oils stripped from the heat of a curling iron.
-
Step 5
Alternate your hairstyles. Slip in ones that don’t involve the use of a curling iron. Go for a sophisticated bun or ponytail that doesn’t require any type of heat to do.
-
Step 6
Invest into an expensive curling iron. These curling irons have heat controls and markings on them that tell you what heat to use on your hair type. It is the easiest way for an average woman to avoid burning out her hair with a curling iron.
