Making a facial cleanser from natural ingredients is easy and inexpensive. Many commercial bar soaps have harsh chemicals that may eventually harm your complexion. Instead, you can have soft, supple skin with a cleanser you made using safe, natural ingredients. This tutorial shows you how to make a fennel face cleanser.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 tsp. fennel seed
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tbsp. buttermilk
  • 1 tbsp. honey
  • Cheesecloth or muslin
  • Strainer
  • Jar with lid
  1. Step 1

Crush 1 tsp. of fennel seed. Use a mortar and pestle or a small grinder. This releases the ingredients that will open your pores.

  2. Step 2

Place the crushed fennel seed in a bowl and pour 1 cup of boiling water over the seed. Let stand for 30 minutes. The boiling water activates the ingredients.

  3. Step 3

After 30 minutes, slowly add 2 tbsp. of buttermilk and 1 tbsp. of honey to the seed and water mixture. Stir to blend. The buttermilk contains vitamins and proteins that nourish the skin. Honey is a natural moisturizer.

  4. Step 4

Using cheesecloth or muslin and a strainer, strain the mixture into a clean jar with a tight-fitting lid. Put the cleanser into the refrigerator until well-chilled.

  5. Step 5

Your cleanser will be golden-colored and a little thicker than water. To use, pour about 2 tbsp. into the palm of your hand and then massage the cleanser into your face. Keep your cleanser in the refrigerator to retain freshness.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don’t have buttermilk? Add ½ tsp. vinegar to 1 cup of milk and let stand for 15 minutes. Use as a substitute for buttermilk in the above recipe.
