How to Coach Two Forwards to Defend in Soccer

Probably the most popular formation in soccer is the 4-4-2 formation. This is an almost universal formation, being used at all levels and in all soccer-playing countries. It offers a good balance of attack and defense, as well as strength in the middle of the field. The forwards in this formation play an important role in preventing opposition attacks and winning the ball back for their team.

Instructions

    • 1

Defense begins with 1v1. Play 1v1 games in order to work on the principle of pressure or delay. In a two forward system, the role of the pressuring first defender is not so much to win possession but to contain the opposition's attack in order to allow the rest of the defending team to get into defensive positions behind the ball

    • 2

Play games of 2v2 with goalkeepers. This will work on the principles of pressure and cover, as well as recovery, but also quick counter attack from the forwards upon winning the ball back close to goal.

    • 3

Play games of 6v6, on grids that are 50 yards long by 30 yards wide. Divide the field in half, and play 3v2 in each half, with three defenders versus two forwards. This will work on the idea of the forwards working together in pressure and cover roles to regain possession and counter attack. This game also works on two forwards moving to prevent long passes out of the back.

    • 4

Work on attack and defense. Play games of 6v4, with four defenders playing to targets at the halfway line, and four midfielders playing with two forwards. Start each play with the goalkeeper having a free distribution to one of the outside defenders. Coach the forwards to move as a unit with the ball from this start position.

    • 5

Use a full sided scrimmage to add realism and the big picture. This will allow players to learn how to play a two forward system in defense, as well as showing the midfielders and defenders how to adjust their defensive shape in relation to the pressuring from the two forwards on the opposition defense.

Tips & Warnings

  • It always helps to use diagrams to explain plays to players. Use them judiciously.

  • Sell the system to the players. There is a lot of work involved in two forwards defending.

  • Always ensure that the field and equipment are safe to use.

  • Always ensure a proper warm up and stretch before any coaching session.
