How to Play the Raga Dipak Scale on the Guitar

The Raga Dipak scale is based on Indian music. Part of the scale utilizes a step pattern of three half steps in a row. This type of pattern is found nowhere in the scales of traditional western music. For something completely unique, try soloing or improving using the Raga Dipak scale.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • guitar
  1. Step 1

    Place your middle finger on the seventh fret of the sixth string. This is the root of the scale.

  2. Step 2

    Place your fourth finger on the ninth fret of the sixth string. This is C sharp. C sharp is the second degree of the Raga Dipak scale.

  3. Step 3

    Play the sixth fret of the fifth string with your first (forefinger) finger. This is D sharp. D sharp is the third degree of the Raga Dipak scale.

  4. Step 4

    Play the seventh fret of the fifth string with your middle finger. This is the note E. E is the fourth degree of the Raga Dipak scale.

  5. Step 5

    Use your ring finger to play the eighth fret of the fifth string. This is an F. F is the fifth degree of the Raga Dipak scale.

  6. Step 6

    Use fourth finger and hold down the ninth fret of the fifth string. This is F sharp, the sixth degree of the Raga Dipak scale.

  7. Step 7

    Use your fourth finger to play the ninth fret of the fourth string. This is the root note played one octave higher. Finish the scale by playing steps seven through one in reverse order to return to the root note.

  8. Step 8

    Finish up the scale by playing steps seven through one in reverse order to return to the root note.

Tips & Warnings
  • It is a good idea to always practice scales with a metronome. This will help you develop a good sense of timing.
