What to Use to Catch Crayfish
Crayfish, known as crawdads in some parts of the world, are small crustaceans found in ponds and slow-moving streams. Crayfish resemble small lobsters, complete with large, pinching claws and thick jointed tails. Crayfish are considered a tasty treat in many types of cuisine, making them a popular species to fish for. They have a sweet taste and are made into everything from fritters to stews. Catching crayfish isn’t difficult if you have the right equipment.

1
Decide on the type of bait you want to use. You can use either homemade bait such as bacon and hot dogs or commercially prepared crayfish baits. Crayfish eat a wide variety of items so either type of bait will work.
-
2
Select a spot to fish for your crayfish. Crayfish tend to gather in quiet, undisturbed spots in the water, so select a slow-moving area. It’s best to fish for crayfish at dusk as they are mainly nocturnal and will be most active after dark.

3
Lay your net down in the water and tie a small piece of fishing line to it. The fishing line will help you keep track of your net. Set your bait in the middle of the net and allow the bait to rest for fifteen minutes.
-
4
Use the flashlight or lantern to check your net before picking it up. The bait should have attracted numerous crayfish, and they will be easy to see with your light.
-
5
Pick up your net slowly, making sure to keep all parts of your net from tipping. Tipping your net is an easy way to lose all of the crayfish you just caught.
-
6
Fill your bucket with water and place your crayfish in the bucket for transport. Crayfish will not live long out of the water, so transporting them in the bucket is the best way to get the most out of your fresh crayfish.
