A frame and mat make a canvas painting look finished and ready to hang. You can frame and mat a canvas yourself with a few simple tips.

  • Frame
  • Mat
  • Glass
  • Framing clips or canvas clips
  • Glass cleaner and rag

Instructions

      Measure the canvas. Write down the length, width and depth. The depth is how thick the canvas is.

      Buy a frame that corresponds to the measurements in Step 1. Many canvases have a generic depth measurement, so be aware that your canvas may not fit if you do not check the depth.

      Measure the inner lip of the frame.

    • 4

      Using the measurement in Step 3, purchase a mat and a pane of glass.

    • 5

      Clean the glass.

    • 6

      Place the pane of glass in the frame.

    • 7

      Place the mat on top of the glass.

    • 8

      Place the canvas on top of the mat and secure it with canvas clips or framing clips.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the frame is not deep enough for your canvas, canvas clips can be used.
