How to Create a Newsletter Using a Wizard in Microsoft Word 2003

Word processors offer a wide variety of useful features. Of the many amazing options that users are presented with in programs such as Microsoft Word 2003, the templates and wizards features allows you to create complex and professional documents and templates in a relatively short amount of time. Users can even download handy newsletter templates and wizards from Microsoft Office Online for free.

      Open the newsletter wizard. Click on “File” and then click “New.” A task pane window will open in the right side of the document. Select “Templates on Office Online” and the click on the desired newsletter template wizard. Use the “Resources” link below to download the recommended newsletter template and wizard.

      Create a date and title. Click on the title and date fields and enter in the volume and issue numbers and date the document; create an active and engaging title for your newsletter.

      Determine the special interest. Click on the “Special interest” table to left and enter in the title and a short description of any special interest articles you have included in this newsletter.

      Name the story headlines. There are several story headlines that you can title; you can delete the ones that you do not need. Scroll through the document and click on the fields that are labeled as story headlines, “Lead Story Headline” and so on. Title the story headlines with the title of the articles that will be included in the newsletter.

      Write the articles that you wish to include you in your newsletter. You will need to create several articles to fill up the newsletter template. It is recommended that you create these articles in a separate Word document and save them and then copy the text and paste it into the template in the appropriate location.

      Select and insert the pictures. If you have specific pictures that you wish to insert into the newsletter, click on any existing picture in the template. Then press the delete button to remove the template picture. Scroll to “Insert” and click on “Picture.” Select “From File” and browse to the desired picture on your computer. Click “Open” to insert the picture into the template.

      Edit the captions. Next to each story, on the right and left columns, you can replace the template captions with active, engaging captions of your own. These captions should be relevant to the story they are juxtaposed next to inside of the newsletter. Typically an article caption features a few sentences from the article that will capture the readers’ attention.

      Save your newsletter. Click on “File” and then click on “Save” to save your finished newsletter.

Tips & Warnings

  • Spend some time playing with the template and arranging it as desired.

  • Make sure to save the file as a separate name so you can reuse the template later.
