One way to extend the life of older laptops is to upgrade them with additional RAM. It gives the laptop additional processing power and speeds up an otherwise sluggish computer. The newer software programs that would previously choke on an older slower laptop will run much better on an upgraded system. In addition to the improved processing performance, upgrading an old computer with RAM is a win-win because upgrading is much cheaper than purchasing a brand new laptop.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine how much RAM your laptop currently has and how much it can hold. Laptops that use the Windows operating system can view the amount of RAM by accessing the General tab of the System Properties window (accessed via clicking on the “Start” button of your computer, then on “Control Panel” and “System”). To find out how much RAM the laptop can hold, read the manufacturer's manual or visit its Web site to download the specifications for the laptop model.

    • 2

Order compatible RAM. Once it is determined how much additional RAM the laptop can accept, order the amount of RAM required.

    • 3

Unplug the laptop and remove the battery. Before beginning the installation process, it is important to turn off all sources of energy to avoid electric shock.

    • 4

Locate the panel under which the RAM is installed and open it. Refer to the computer’s manual if you’re not sure which panel is the proper one to remove. RAM panels are usually located on the bottom of the laptop. Some laptop panels can be removed by depressing a button, while others require the use of a small screwdriver. Once located, remove the panel to expose the existing RAM and available RAM slots.

    • 5

Insert the new RAM. Refer to the computer’s manual before inserting the upgrade. If you are replacing the old RAM, remove the old memory nodules and insert the new ones. If you’re adding to the existing RAM, insert the memory nodules into one of the available slots. Make sure the nodule is fully installed and locked in place.

    • 6

Replace the panel covers. Plug in the computer and turn it on. Once the computer is up and running, see if the computer recognizes the upgrade. Go back to the System Properties window to see if the new RAM is recognized. If the laptop doesn’t recognize the newly installed RAM, turn the computer off and repeat the above steps to make sure the RAM is securely locked into place.

Tips & Warnings

  • Because there are various types of computer RAM, it is important to ensure that the new RAM is compatible with the laptop.

  • Some laptops require pairs of RAM. Check with the laptop’s specifications prior to ordering additional RAM.
