How to Choose a DSL Service

Finding a DS--or digital subscriber line service--provider can be a challenge with so many companies offering special incentives for new customers. By doing a cost analysis with several DSL service providers in your area you can make an intelligent decision that will save you time and money.

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer with Internet connection or a phone book
  • Paper and pen
  • Telephone
  1. Step 1

    Read the manufacturer's directions on your computer to ensure that your computer is compatible with receiving DSL service before your install DSL in your home.

  2. Step 2

    Search for companies that offer DSL services in your area by performing an Internet search using the keywords DSL, high speed Internet and Internet providers. Be sure to also use the name of your town or city in your search query. If you do not have access to the Internet, perform a search in your local phone book using the same keywords to find a list of companies.

  3. Step 3

    Take note of the search results that you have compiled and record the names and phone numbers of the DSL service providers in your area.

  4. Step 4

    Call the DSL service providers you have chosen and ask them if they are able to provide DSL services to your area, do they offer any special incentives or discounts to new customers, do they charge for installing the service, is a contract mandatory and will their initial rates rise after a certain period of time.

  5. Step 5

    Choose the DSL provider that best suits your needs from the questions you have asked and have them come out and install the DSL service at your home.

  • Ask about special incentives or specials when calling to obtain DSL service.
  • Ask about the speed of the DSL service, as it can vary in price.
  • There is a difference among Internet connections. There is a land-line connection that connects with a phone line similar to DSL but the bandwidth is narrower and the connection slower. There is also Internet service provided via a cable connection. Make sure you ask for DSL to be installed.
