Be realistic in your attempt to ask for an increase by considering the level of your current skills, your education and the maximum salary one may expect for doing your job. You can find much of that information online. If you find from your research that you do qualify for increased pay, request it, recognizing that you may be called upon to shoulder greater responsibility.

Go back to school if you feel that you are lacking skills to do your job. There are two reasons for doing so. First, it demonstrates to your management that you are willing to go out of your way to increase the value of what you bring to the company. Also, it's a proven fact that those who add to their education are more likely to be promoted than those who do not. Take courses at your local college or find courses online that will add to your abilities.

Learn as much as you can from your peers. Join associations that relate specifically to your profession, and mingle with professionals who are willing to share their knowledge of your profession. Also, look for a mentor within your organization who has more years of experience than you do and is willing to share his insights as to your performance. Both of those efforts will be impressive to your management. Above all, share your efforts with your management when you ask for a raise.

Go to as many seminars relating to your job as you may be offered. Never turn down an opportunity to become more knowledgeable about your job. Besides, the company will, in most cases, pay for your attendance. Once again, be sure to make your management aware of your having gone.

Be a consistent performer. The U.S. Department of Labor estimates that the average American worker only gives his company 5 1/2 hours of work per day. No company respects an employee who has no work ethic, so arrive at work earlier than you are expected, and do not leave until the job is done. A company is always looking to promote their most productive employees, and it is easy to demonstrate this ability.
