How to Serenade Someone on a Balcony
Romance in the 21st century doesn’t have to consist of texting someone “I want u.” Go the old-school way of winning a heart when you serenade someone on a balcony. This long-standing tradition, which dates back to the medieval era of knights and dragons, has long been in decline. And that is exactly what will make it all the more special for your special someone. Follow these steps to serenade success.

1
Pick the proper person. First off, pick a person with a balcony. Try to date someone who already has one attached to her apartment or house. If that’s not possible, get your significant other up on the balcony of a restaurant, tourist spot or other area where you can stand beneath and sing to her.

2
Prepare your song. Don’t just go up to a balcony and start singing the first chewing gum jingle that pops into your head. Pick a song that is not only easy to sing (no "Star-Spangled Banner," please), but also comes from your heart. If he likes a particular love song, for instance, listen to it 506 times until you learn all the lyrics, the rhythm and the best way to sing it. Practice into a tape recorder and pick a different song if a particular one makes you sound like an injured dog.

Add an instrument. Though completely optional, this step does wonders for covering up a less than stellar voice. If you play guitar, she might as well marry you now. If you have no instrumental skills, grab a tambourine, triangle, bells or other musical accompaniment that doesn’t take 20 years to learn and adds some ambiance.

Set the stage. Surprise is the main element of a serenade. Make sure your beloved has no idea it’s coming. Also make sure he’s not, ahem, otherwise occupied when you show up at his window. The safest way to set the stage? Start right after you’ve left his house and you know he’s awake and alone. If in a public place, get him up on a balcony area and tell him to wait there, you’ll be right back, you have to go get a surprise for him. He’ll be floored when you show up beneath him singing his song.

5
Break into rapturous song.

Watch the person’s reaction. If she turns around and runs away, slamming the door in her wake, stop singing immediately and go home. If she woos and coos, finish the song and tell her you love her.

Tips & Warnings
Avoid serenades at large apartment buildings, especially in the middle of the night. Or, wear a helmet.
Beware of any serenade in the middle of the night. Pick evening times when your beloved is still awake.
