Internet connection sharing in Windows XP is a simple way to allow all networked computers in your home to connect to the Web at the same time. It allows you to avoid the cost of having a separate modem for each computer, and can be configured to allow other computers online only when the main computer is connected, or will allow the other computers to connect when needed. The only drawback to using Internet connection sharing is that the host computer must be up and running for the other computers on the network to connect.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Home network
  • Modem (either dial-up or DSL)
  1. Step 1

Make sure the modem is installed and working on the XP computer you wish to serve as host to the other computers on the network.

  2. Step 2

Set-up the connection to the Internet and make sure you can surf the Web before enabling Internet connection sharing.

  3. Step 3

Click on your "Start" menu button and then on "Connect to." When the next screen comes up, click on "Show all connections."

  4. Step 4

Right-click on the icon for the connection you use to connect to the Internet. A new window will pop up.

  5. Step 5

Click on the "Advanced" tab on the new screen. In the second box you will see a box to "allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection." Check this box.

  6. Step 6

Decide if you want the other computers on your network to be able to connect to the Internet at anytime. By leaving this box unchecked, it means that you have to have an established connection before any other computer can connect to the Internet.

  7. Step 7

Click the final check box if you want other computers on the network to be able to turn these options off and on.

  8. Step 8

Click on the "OK" button when you have made your choices. Reboot your computer and all computers on your network should be able to surf the Internet or download emails using your connection.

Tips & Warnings
  • Leaving the second box unchecked is a way to monitor the time others spend on the Internet. Since they can only connect through the one computer, it can be shut down when surfing the net is inappropriate.
  • This will work for two or more computers either working though a network hub or directly connected to each other though a LAN port.
