Christmas trees are typically the focal part of our home decorations, and provide a place for Santa to leave our gifts. For those who choose to use a live tree, it is saddening to see it begin withering and dropping needles before Christmas morning even arrives. Proper care of your tree, and knowing how to feed your Christmas tree, will ensure that it looks as lively and healthy on Christmas morning as it did the day you brought it home from the tree farm.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Deep tree base to hold sufficient water
  • Fresh, clean source of water
  • Sugar or Karo syrup
  • Epson salts
  1. Step 1

Choose a tree base that is deep enough to hold a sufficient amount of water to keep your tree hydrated. Your Christmas tree stand should hold at least 1 qt. of water for every inch of the diameter of the tree stem.

  2. Step 2

Cut 5 cm off the bottom of the base of the Christmas tree just before placing it into the tree stand. This enables the tree to absorb greater amounts of water.

  3. Step 3

Water your tree regularly to keep it fresh and hydrated. The primary reason Christmas trees dry out quickly and begin dropping needles is too little water. The water level in your stand should never drop below the bottom of the tree. Use only clean, fresh water, as your tree may not readily absorb dirty or contaminated water.

  4. Step 4

Add sugar to the water. Some people believe that adding sugar to the water will encourage the tree to live longer. Adding an ounce of clear Karo syrup to the water daily will help to feed your tree.

  5. Step 5

Sprinkle a few pinches of Epson salts into the water for greener needles. The magnesium sulphate will produce a vibrant, festive color.
