Fold sheets of bright yellow or orange card stock or construction paper in half lengthwise. Cut a cone shape out of them, making sure to leave them attached at the tip of the cone. Write "Under Construction: (Name's) Birthday Party" on the outside of the cone. Write the party details on the inside of the card.

Use your child's trucks and other construction toys to decorate the party area. Hang yellow and black streamers and balloons. Or use caution tape from the hardware store along with black and yellow balloons.

Make a wrecking ball pinata by inflating a large round balloon. Cover it with strips of newspaper and glue and allow to dry. Cut out a small hole and fill it with toys and candy, and then cover it up with pieces of black crepe paper glued on. Bury toys and goodies in the sandbox. Let the kids dig up the prizes with construction toys. Give party favors and prizes such as mini flashlights, stickers, tattoos and coloring books.

Continue the construction theme with the food. Have guests construct their own English muffin pizzas, tacos or other fun foods. All you need to do is set out all of the prepared fixings and let each child top their muffin or tortilla just the way they like it.

Make a simple construction site cake by topping a sheet cake with crushed chocolate cookies for dirt, piles of graham cracker crumbs for sand and some clean, tiny construction toys on top.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't worry about having too many scheduled activities. Kids will have a blast digging in the sand or dirt.

  • Don't forget anybody. Making sure everybody gets some party favors means no hurt feelings.
