When it comes to education, most people think of the traditional classroom and daily routine. Education extends far past the classroom and people that are brave enough to seek it outside of the traditional avenues can reap enormous benefits. Choosing to study Arabic in Morocco is one way to educate yourself and have an adventure at the same time.

Things You'll Need:

  • Guide book of choice
  1. Step 1

Study at Qalam wa Lawh Arabic Language Academy if you are more of a city person than a country person and want to study right in the heart of Rabat, the capital city of Morocco. Teachers at Qalam wa Lawh Arabic Language Academy are all former Fulbright scholars and some have held previous positions in Morocco as university professors. Contact them at 31 Rue Al Qadi Ben Hamadi Essenhaji, Souissi Rabat Morocco. Phone: 212 (37) 75-57-90. See Resources for website.

  2. Step 2

Enroll in the language institute of Jeunesse des chantiers Marocains in the city of Safi. Their teaching methods are specifically designed for foreign students and taught in English. Their approach emphasizes the fundamental ways in which you acquire a new language--by focusing on speaking, listening, writing and reading skills. Their lessons are enhanced through their use of audiovisual and computer learning CDs. Contact them via post or phone: JCM BP 680 Safi principal. Marrakech. MOROCCO. 46000. Phone: +212 70962757

  3. Step 3

Attend ILCS Arabic Language School (Centre de Langues de ILCS) in Rabat, and get not only an education but also a lifestyle change. Imagine taking your homework down by the water to review as Rabat is within a 15 minute walk from the beach. See Resources for contact information.

  4. Step 4

Take your Arabic class within a World Cultural Heritage city, as declared by Unesco. It is located in the center of downtown Tetouan. Dar Loughat is a progressive institution in Morocco that provides intensive courses in all levels of Modern Standard Arabic and Colloquial Moroccan Arabic throughout the year. The teachers are all native Arabic speakers, so you benefit from learning from people who know the nuances of the language and the accent, along with the cultural and traditional norms. Dar Loughat also offers cultural excursions that will further enhance your learning experience. See Resources for contact information.

Tips & Warnings
  • Save money and check out books from your library on Morocco instead of buying them from a major book store.
  • Educate yourself about the country you will be living in, long before you go. This will serve to reduce the culture shock and prepare you for the cultural aspect of studying a language in a new land.
  • Lonely Planet and Let's Go publications are two great publications that write guidebooks on the area.
  • Educate yourself thoroughly on the customs of the area you will be staying in. You do not want to inadvertently offend someone because you were not aware of a custom or habit.
