This creative idea of making an art smock out of a pillowcase is a fun and easy project that you and your child can create together. With very little sewing and a lot of imagination, your child will have a unique and personalized art smoke that is the perfect size to cover all clothing. You can chose to recycle an old pillowcase or buy one especially for this project.

1
Measure your child. Hold the pillowcase up to your child. Mark and measure the openings needed for head and arm holes.
-
2
Cut out the hole for the head on the closed end of the pillowcase. When making the cut, cut it out in a half circle, creating a "neckline" in the pillowcase. When cutting arm holes, cut in the same half circle fashion. This will enable your child to move her arms freely when wearing the smock.

Make a pocket. Make cuts into the seams on the opened side of the pillowcase. Cut approximately 6 inches to create pockets in the front of the smock. Fold the front of the pillowcase upward to create a pocket that is approximately 3 inches deep. Sew the sides of the pocket to secure it in place.

4
Sew a seam on the edges of the arm and head holes to prevent the material from fraying. Embellish the edges with ribbon or rick-rack. Separate the large pocket at the bottom of the smock with large buttons. Simply hand sew a button or two in the center of the large pocket to create to pockets. The large button will add to the embellishment of the smock.
