Step 1
Face your opponent. You should be standing about an arm's length away from each other. The element of surprise is important to the Jiu Jitsu hip throw, so don't telegraph your intentions.
-
Step 2
Reach forward and grab your opponent's right elbow with your left hand. If he is wearing a martial arts uniform or shirt, grab the material firmly.
-
Step 3
Pull the arm toward you until the opponent's right wrist is in your arm pit. Clamp down on it with your upper arm so that your opponent can't pull it out.
-
Step 4
Thrust your right arm under your opponent's left arm and reach around his waist. Step around your opponent as you do this while maintaining a firm grip on his right arm. Bend your knees while you do this so you can duck under the arm. Place your right hand on the opponent's right hip and pull him toward you. It is important that your bodies are pressed together tight. You should be lower than your opponent.
-
Step 5
Move your right foot in front of the opponent's legs and plant it in front of his right foot. Your legs should be shoulder-width apart. Bend your knees to get your hips beneath your opponent's hips. Your hips should hit him about mid-thigh. Pull your opponent close to you. If there is any space between you and your opponent, he could escape your throw.
-
Step 6
Pop your hips upward by straightening your knees in a sudden motion. At the same time pull your opponent forward and down with both hands. Turn your torso to match your hips. These three motions together will flip your opponent through the air.
-
Step 7
Drop your opponent on his back. It is up to you how hard you want your opponent to fall. If you want it to be soft, keep pulling while he flies through the air. This will help him land primarily on his legs. If you want the fall to be hard, let him go once he is airborne. This will make him land on his head or upper back.
