How to Dress in Layers and Still Look Fashionable

As chilly temperatures approach, it's best to bundle up. While warmth is key, one can also still look fashionable while piling on the layers. The trick is how you layer, what you layer, how the cuts of certain pieces layer.

Instructions

    • 1

Wear a long sleeve tee that clings to your body under a sweater. The tee's snug fit will not add unwanted bulk and also will keep body heat in.

    • 2

Get a leg up with tights. Less bulky than leggings, you can also wear them under jeans for especially cold days. Try pairing with knee boots and wool skirts for the winter.

    • 3

Invest in a coat either in a princess cut or A-line for the most flattering fit. Avoid buying one that fits too close to the body; make sure there is plenty of space to layer underneath.

    • 4

Try dark ankle booties over dark-denim skinny jeans, topped with a bright chunky knit. Not only will the booties and knits add proportion to the slim cut of the jeans, but your legs will look longer in the darker colors.

    • 5

Keep your neck and head warm with a matching scarf and hat. Stock up in several colors such as red, black and white to alternate looks.

    • 6

Choose leather gloves or those made with Thinsulate to keep your hands warm.

Tips & Warnings

  • Since tights aren't as thick as leggings, be prepared to replace them after about 20 uses.

  • Cashmere is nice, but avoid a cashmere hat. It won't keep your head very warm. Go for wool or a thick cotton knit.
