Geometry is an important part of the GRE.
Geometry is an important part of the GRE.

The Graduate Record Exam (GRE) is a test many graduate schools require students to take as part of their application process. The GRE contains three parts: verbal comprehension, math, and writing. Not only is it important to practice for the GRE, but it is also important to learn about the test itself. This guide will help you prepare for the GRE so that you can do the best job possible when you take the test.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

Learn about the test. Learning about the GRE will help you prepare for it because you will know what to expect on test day. Purchase a good GRE book. I found "Cracking the GRE," published by The Princeton Review especially helpful, but there are several good books on the market.

  2. Step 2

Learn vocabulary. It is impossible to learn all of the words the GRE might put on the test, so it is best to learn the meanings of different prefixes and suffixes.

  3. Step 3

Review high school math. The GRE contains high school math problems, such as algebra and geometry. Memorize formulas for algebra and geometry.

  4. Step 4

Learn how to write argument and issue essays. Many GRE books will provide tips on how to write good essays for the test. Review the tips and practice writing essays in the amount of time the GRE will provide you: 45 minutes for an issue essay and 30 minutes for an argument essay.

  5. Step 5

Practice the types of questions the GRE will have on it either in a GRE book or on a web-based practice test.

Tips & Warnings
  • Learn the meanings of prefixes and suffixes rather than trying to learn the meanings of hundreds of words for the GRE.
  • Practice the types of questions that will be on the GRE either in a GRE book or on a web-based practice test.
  • Learn about the test.
  • Don't wait until the last minute to prepare.
