Step 1
Dachshunds are wonderful animals that come in smooth, long or wire haired coats. While wire haired dachshunds require a bit more care, the general grooming guidelines for your dog are the same. Begin by brushing your dog regularly, at least once ever two weeks. Give your weiner dog a good brushing, and be sure to include the belly and legs. Good brushing spreads the natural oils throughout your pets coat and creates a nice sheen.

Step 2
If your dachshund is brushed on a regular basis, the author of this article recommends that you bathe your dog no more than once every six weeks. Doxies are not particularly stinky animals; and over bathing can dry out their skin. Use a mild high quality pet shampoo and give your dog a good lather and rinse. Conditioner is usually unnecessary, but you can try using some if you'd like.

Step 3
Most dogs appreciate being dried, however, dachshunds are dogs that love to burrow in towels (and blankets!) and dry themselves. Give them a quick towel down, then throw the towels on the floor and let them do the rest of the job. They love it.

Step 4
Once your dachshund is bathed and dried, clip and file his nails to ensure that they are short and look nice. This helps reduce the risk of injury from split nails. Grooming your dachshund helps keep your dog happy and healthy, and makes for excellent bonding time between you and your dog. If you prefer, you can also find a dog groomer in your area to keep your dachshund looking his very best, however, they are very easy to maintain and might not be worth the additional expense of hiring a professional groomer.
