How to Check Your Engine Oil

You need to check the oil in your car engine every so often or you will ruin your engine. This article will explain how to do so.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    You shouldn't check the engine oil after it has been running or you will get inaccurate readings. Check the oil when the car has been sitting.

  2. Step 2

    Park the car on a level surface and pop the hood.

  3. Step 3

    Reach underneath the hood and pull the hood latch and squeeze it, as you squeeze it lift the hood up

  4. Step 4

    There should be a long stick coming out of the engine, it will have a little handle and may even say engine oil on it. Pull the dipstick out all of the way.

  5. Step 5

    Wipe the dipstick off so you don't get an inaccurate reading from oil that was already on the dipstick.

  6. Step 6

    Stick the dipstick all the way in and pull it out and hold it horizontally. There should be lines on your dipstick sayign when to add oil and whether or not it is full

  7. Step 7

    Add Oil if necessary.
