Take steps now to help your golden retriever live a long and happy life.

The golden retriever was first developed by Lord Tweedmouth of Scotland during the 1800s for use as a hunting dog. Today, this popular breed not only still works as a hunting companion, but their friendliness and eager-to-please attitudes make them excellent service dogs as well as family pets. Although the average life span of the golden retriever is 10 to 13 years, there are some steps you can take to help them live healthier lives that may increase their lifespan.

Instructions

    • 1

Feed your golden retriever a high quality dog food. Look for a dog food that lists its ingredients as all natural and has a meat source listed as the first ingredient in the product description.

    • 2

Give your golden retriever small amounts of fruits and vegetables as a treat. Many fruits and vegetables, such as melons, blueberries and broccoli provide antioxidants that can help keep your dog's immune system strong.

    • 3

Take your golden retriever for a daily walk. Dogs need exercise the same way humans do. Since golden retrievers are prone to hip dysplasia, discuss with your veterinarian what an acceptable distance is for you and your dog to walk. Keep in mind that older dogs may not be able to keep up the same pace as they did when they were younger.

    • 4

Keep your golden retriever at a healthy weight. Extra weight not only puts pressure on a dog's joints, but also causes the heart muscle to have to work harder. According to the American Kennel Club (AKC) the standard weight for a male is 65 to 75 lbs. and 55 to 65 lbs. for a female.

    • 5

Brush your golden retriever's teeth and gums two to three times a week. Bacteria in the mouth can lead to gingivitis and cause gum and teeth problems. Use a brush and toothpaste specifically designed for a dog's mouth to help keep those canine teeth shiny white.

Take your golden retriever in for its yearly checkup. Your veterinarian can not only keep your dogs shots up to date, but can also do blood work to check your dog's heart, kidney and other vital organs. Early detection of a medical condition is the key when it comes to treatment options that can help your best friend live a long and healthy life.
