Spooky Spider Halloween Cake
Spooky Spider Halloween Cake

Looking for a "spooktacular" spider cake for Halloween? This spider cake is sure to cause screams of delight at your neighborhood Halloween party. Plus, kids of all ages can help with the decorating.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Box cake mix and necessary ingredients red-velvet is fun so the spider's insides are red. If need be, add red food dye to a yellow or white cake mix.
  • medium size glass or metal bowl (oven proof)
  • Chocolate frosting
  • Black or brown pipe cleaners
  • Large "googly eyes" from craft store
  • plastic vampire teeth
  • Small tube of red frosting
  • Small tube of black tube frosting
  • Round serving platter
  1. Step 1

Make the cake batter using the directions (and necessary ingredients) on the box. If so desired, you can add 2 oz of red food dye to white or yellow cake mix to color cake red.

  2. Step 2

In lieu of using cake plans, use a 2 qt metal or glass bowl to create the round body shape of a spider. Grease the bowl with butter or cooking spray. Pour the batter into the bowl.

  3. Step 3

Bake in a 350 degree oven for approximately 40-50 minutes. Insert a knife into the center of the cake to check if fully baked. If clean, the cake is done.

  4. Step 4

Let cake cool for 10-15 minutes. Put the serving platter on the top of the cake pan and flip pan and platter over to turn the cake out onto the platter. Let cake fully cool for 1-2 hours.

  5. Step 5

Frost the cake with the chocolate frosting. If desired, pipe frosting around base of cake for extra detail.

  6. Step 6

    To decorate:
-Use the black gel icing to draw a spider web on the plate.
-Cut 4 pipe cleaners in half and bend to look like spider legs. Insert into sides of cake.
-Press eyes into cake (in eye position). Use black gel icing to "draw" fuzzy eyebrows above eyes.
-Take plastic vampire teeth and cut in half. Trim off the "sides" of the plastic teeth so it will be easier to insert into cake. Take red icing tube and paint the ends of the vampire fangs to look like dripping blood. Carefully insert fangs into cake in "mouth" position.
-Super Scary. Super simple. And a great Halloween cake idea!

Tips & Warnings
  • Licorice straws and candy eyes can be used-- but the pipe cleaners and large googly eyes tend to have greater impact and added humor.
  • Be sure to remove non-edible decorations before cutting cake.
