Step 1
First put the litter box in a clean, quiet area, away from carpet. It is important to keep the litter box away from carpet because cats new to using boxes may prefer the carpet over the actual litter box.
-
Step 2
Direct the cat to the new location of the litter box. You may want to place the cat inside the clean litter box to familiarize them with its location.
-
Step 3
Make sure you do not move the litter box around. Once it is placed in one spot, keep it in that one spot. Changing a cat's routine can often cause stress.
-
Step 4
Always keep the litter box neat and tidy. This includes scooping and changing it once a week, especially if it is covered. Cats need a clean environment and will not do well in a litter box if it is full of odors.
-
Step 5
Make sure you keep the same type of litter inside the box. A cat has to be familiar with it. Unless the cat is having problems with that litter, do not change it!!!!
-
Step 6
If you have multiple cats, always have multiple litter boxes.

on 10/6/2008 great article, it's very important to train your cat to use the litterbox because it would really stick up your house if they do it anywhere.
