How to Make Carnival Corn Dogs
Though perhaps not an everyday food, corn dogs are a favorite among fair and carnival visitors, and especially popular with children. However, these treats can be prepared away from the fairgrounds, and served with your favorite condiments as a snack or informal meal. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Deep fryer or large, deep pot
- 1/2 to 3/4 qt. vegetable oil
- 1/2 cup yellow cornmeal
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- Pinch of black or cayenne pepper
- 1 egg, divided
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/8 tsp. salt
- 1/8 cup sugar
- 2 tsp. baking powder
- 8 hot dogs
- 8 wooden skewers
- Paper towels
- Plate

Heat the oil in a deep fryer or deep pan. The ideal temperature for frying is between 350 and 360 degrees.

Mix together yellow cornmeal, salt, flour, black or cayenne pepper, baking powder and sugar. Set aside the mixture in a bowl.

Combine one part divided egg and milk in another bowl, beating the egg thoroughly as you mix. Add the cornmeal mixture and whisk vigorously.

Insert a skewer into each hotdog, moving half-way up the body of the frank.

Quickly dip two or three skewered hotdogs into the cornmeal batter, then into the frying oil.

Fry each hot dog between 3 and 10 minutes, until the batter is golden brown.

Set each corn dog on a plate covered with several sheets of paper towel, allowing the oil to drain and the batter to cool.

Repeat steps 5 through 7 until all corn dogs are prepared. Serve warm.
