Step 1
All plants need light. If you were to take a photograph indoors without a flash you would be reminded of how little light there really is inside a house. So position your plants near a window. Most houseplants are varieties that evolved in shady locations, so they will be somewhat forgiving of being indoors. But they still need light to photosynthesize and make food to live.
-
Step 2
All plants need water. Water is how they take up nutrients from the soil. Let the top of the soil -- up to an inch -- go dry to avoid over-watering, but never let the soil dry out. You can buy a water meter to stick in the soil to tell you when your plant needs water.
-
Step 3
Plants need food. But not too much. It is easy to overfeed and burn roots. You can buy handy sticks that are pre-measured and just put them in the soil. Or you can feed liquid or dry foods. I suggest using half of the label directions just to be sure you don't overfeed. You can feed a little more often this way if you want.
-
Step 4
Other tips:
Regularly check for insect pests. If they are found early they will be easy to treat.
Turn your plant every month or two so a different side is facing the light. This will keep the plant from growing lob-sided.
Keep dust off of leaves. Plants look better and get better light.
Use trays under pots. This way excess water can be re-absorbed by the soil and floors won't get stained. -
Step 5
Now watch your beautiful plants grow!
