Assuming your guitar is tuned in the standard E tuning, we'll start by tuning to a standard "Drop D" tuning. First, compare the harmonic of the 5th fret of the 6th (low E) string to the 12th fret of the 4th (D) string. Once matched, you are now in "Drop D" tuning.

Now, we'll drop the A string to G. To do this, we compare the harmonics of the 5th fret of the 6th string to the 7th fret of the 5th string. (Don't let all the numbers confuse you, just read carefully!) Now the A string is dropped to G, or, two steps down.

We continue dropping our strings by following the same patter for the next string, dropping the D string two steps down to C. To do this, repeat the previous step, except this time on the 5th and 4th strings.

4
Next we will drop the 3rd string, G, two steps down to F. Again, repeat the previous step but this time on the 4th and 3rd strings.

5
We're almost there! This time it's a little different. To drop the second string, B, to A, we have only to compare the 4th fret of the 3rd string, to the 2nd string plucked open. (NOTE: For this string only, we use the fret comparison, rather than the harmonic comparison. )

6
Once you've got the 2nd string tuned to A, the last string is easy. Simply repeat the step of comparing the 5th fret of the 2nd string's harmonic to the 7th fret of the 1st string. The high E string has become D.
