Things You'll Need:
- An old (or new) closet door, mine is 23 3/4 " by 80"
- Two IKEA or any other filing cabinets
- A chunk of white laminated project board (3/4") cut to same size as the door
- Some 3/4" filler boards
- Screws, screwdriver
-
Step 1
Cut project board to the same size as your door. Mine was 23.75" by 80".
-
Step 2
Place door on top of two cabinets spaced on each end of the door.
-
Step 3
(Optional) Place filler board on top of the door. I cut my 3/4" filler board 1" shorter on each side, 21.75" by 78". I then centered the filler board on the door. After doing this, you'll have a 1" gap around the filler board, which allows you to place a decorative stripe or rope light (as I did).
-
Step 4
Place the project board with white laminated side up on top of the closet door (or optional filler board).
-
Step 5
You now have your table top. Before attaching anything, sit at your new desk and evaluate its length/height. The height may be a little less than what you're used to, but I'm 6'0", and I am very comfortable sitting at my desk. If the desk is not tall enough, use more filler board, or place blocks underneath the filing cabinets.
-
Step 6
Red represents the pilot hole (smaller diameter than the screw that will go into it)Pre-drill pilot holes in the strategic spots in the closet door and/or filler board, as well as halfway through the project board. To do this, you will have to flip the entire table top assembly upside-down because you don't want any holes in your laminated project board table top.
-
Step 7
One attached, flip the entire table top assembly and place it back on top of the cabinets.
-
Step 8
From underneath, screw in a few stopper screws along the back and front side of the desk. This will prevent the table top from sliding back and forth on the cabinets. If you feel risky, anchor the table top directly into the cabinets, which will damage them. Optionally, you can anchor a stopper strip of wood along the entire underside of the desk along the perimeter of the cabinets.
