Making a great cake from scratch is easy.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 8 or 9 inch cake pans. (Buttered and floured to prevent sticking)
  • 2 cups self rising flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1 1/4 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 cup softened unsalted butter
  • If you want a colored cake: red/green, 1/2 teaspoon food coloring
  1. Step 1

Mix milk and vanilla together and set aside.

  2. Step 2

    Cream butter and sugar together.

Add eggs one at a time and mix well after each egg.

  3. Step 3

    Add flour and milk alternately.

  4. Step 4

Coloring your cake. If you what it purple because your kids love Barney? Red for Valentines? Red for Superman w/ Blue Icing and a Red S on the top. Green or Yellow: Whatever your occasion? Be CREATIVE!!!

Add 1/2 teaspoon of desired color to batter and mix thoroughly. You can even make two different colors if you like.

  5. Step 5

Add mixture to cake pans and bake 400 degrees F for about 30 minutes or until inserted toothpick comes out clean.

  6. Step 6

I like to freeze my cakes before frosting them. It prevents them from being damaged while frosting and a child could even frost it. My kids love too do this.

For Frosting see my ehow article. How to make Butter Cream Frosting.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not turn out cake immediately after removing it from thee oven, allow them to cool first.
  • This is also a great sheet cake recipe.
