Tomatoes are the staple of many dishes though the majority of their uses revolves around being the constituents of sauces. To be used in a sauce the tomatoes must be peeled and there is a very easy mechanism for removing the peels of your tomatoes, though tedious it may be.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • pot
  • tomatoes
  • slotted spoon
  • bowl
  • ice
  1. Step 1

Place a pot of water on the stove and bring to a boil. Make sure there is enough water in the pot to cover the tomatoes that you will be using. Ready a large bowl of ice water.

  2. Step 2

On the bottom side of your tomatoes, cut an 'X' about 1 inch by 1 inch.

  3. Step 3

Place as many tomatoes into the boiling pot as will fit comfortably without the tomatoes crowding the pot. Allow the tomatoes to remain in the boiling water for no more than 30 seconds or the tomatoes will begin to cook too much and get very mushy (this is not what you want specifically if you are to use the tomatoes in a salsa or other fresh tomato recipe)

  4. Step 4

Upon removal from the boiling water, place directly into the bowl of ice water. Remove as soon as the tomatoes are cooled off (no more than a minute) otherwise the tomatoes will soak up too much water and become 'water logged'.

  5. Step 5

At this point, the skins should be very loose and you should be able to peel easily using the 'X's that you cut as starting points. It is easier to use a paring knife to aid you.
