Shopping at the commissary is a privilege extended to all members and spouses of active duty or retired military members. It does take a little bit of strategy to be able to take advantage of all of the sales the commissary offers. Here are some quick tips to help you save even more money at your local commissary.

  1. Step 1

    If possible to do not shop on payday. In the event that you have no choice, but to shop on payday arrive early. All Commissaries have early bird hours. Arrive an hour before the main hours open, to fully complete your shopping and be the first one in line when the main checkout lines open.

    Take advantage of all coupons. At the entry way to the commissary there is always circulars with current coupons. Pick these up. Many times these coupons are for .50 or more off items that are already on sale.

    Shop the scratch and dent section for deep discounts. Good items to pick up are items with dented boxes, but the prepackaged contents are still sealed. A good example of this is cereal, supplements, rice, or cookies.

    Dairy products, eggs, ground beef, and frozen vegetables are always cheaper at the Commissary. Always walk slowly through these areas to spot any sales that have accompanying coupons.

  • Always check the produce section for reduced produce.
  • Visit the meat department and look for coupons, that are routinely on prepackaged chicken items.
  • Pay attention to the price per pound. Lower cost options are always on the top or bottom shelves.

  • Pita breads, tortillas, and quality whole grain breads are usually almost one dollar less at the commissary.
  • Never arrive at the Commissary on payday towards the end of the day, and expect to get everything on your list.
  • Always have a list, to avoid wasting time.
