Planning a vegetable or flower garden? Rototilling makes the soil much easier to work with plus it works wonders for the plants!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Roundup (if there is existing vegetation)
  • Rototiller
  • Safety goggles
  1. Step 1

If there is existing vegetation in the area you wish to rototill- spray roundup on the entire area and wait 5-7 days for it to die. This will make your job much easier when you are using the machine, especially if the area you are tilling is existing turf.

  2. Step 2

Once the area is cleared, bring out the rototiller! Check to make sure there are no obstructions in the tilling blades and put on your safety goggles.

  3. Step 3

Move the tiller to the area you wish to cultivate and start that baby up!

  4. Step 4

Make long, straight passes through the bed making sure to put pressure on the area where the blades are... 'digging' the blades into the ground. Each pass should be right up against the previous pass, so that the entire bed is cultivated and there are no compact spots.

  5. Step 5

    Add plants!!!

Tips & Warnings
  • Definitly wear safety goggles when doing this, you don't want to lose an eye from a flying pebble!
  • Work boots are also a good idea, PLEASE don't do this in flip flops, those blades are sharp!
  • Using a rototiller will make your future garden happy, but if you don't take the necessary precautions, you could be in big trouble. Read the owners manual and take it seriously, injuries ARE possible. Just be careful!
